In 1664, Jesus appeared to Sister Margaret Mary Alocoque while she was praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament. He showed forth his heart; surrounded by thorns, glowing with flames and surmounted by a cross. He pointed to His heart and said, "Behold this heart which has loved men so!" The medal depicts the apparition.
