The Apostle St. Andrew was the brother of St. Peter. He is the patron saint of Greece, Russia, Scotland and patron of the Patriarch of Constantinople. Tradition developed that St. Andrew was martyred by crucifixion on an X-shaped cross, or saltire, now commonly known as "Saint Andrew's Cross". Supposedly this was at his own request, as he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus. He is the popular saint of fishermen.
